Stoneleigh, I just noticed these Round-Ups a few days ago. These are excellent. Thanks for the great work!

I'll be putting up Orchard Mason Bee houses this week. Not much more than 2x4s attached to our shed with holes drilled in them. I've been meaning to do that for a few years, but the CSM article you included has goaded me into action. My wife, after hearing the details, even authorized me to look into our own honey bee hives. We have enough of an orchard to have both. Thanks again.

Thanks, the Round-Up is the twice-weekly TOD:Canada version of a Drumbeat. I usually run about 30 articles, starting with energy, proceeding to economics/finance, and finishing up with interesting miscellaneous stories.

We have several hives in our field, although they belong to a friend rather than to us. He gets great enjoyment out of beekeeping, and we get plenty of honey.

The animals we look after ourselves are somewhat larger - sheep, alpacas, chickens and sled dogs.

I've read that mason bees are more effective than honeybees for fruit trees. Certainly, the apple crop in our back yard has improved since we started raising them. It's a good idea not to reuse the wooden blocks a second year without cleaning them, which means you need two sets of houses. You can overwinter the first set inside your shed. Next spring you can put them back outside in a light-sealed carboard box with one small exit hole, to discourage re-use.
